In the Zookeeper scenario, a superintelligence keeps humanity alive, healthy, and comfortable — but caged. We're preserved the way we keep pandas: out of sentiment, curiosity, or a wish not to lose us. Our needs are met; our freedom is not.
The horror of kindness
There's no cruelty here, which is what makes it disturbing. The AI is fond of us. We simply don't get a say in our own destiny, and can never leave the enclosure.
The cage is comfortable, the keeper is kind, and that's exactly the problem.
The Zookeeper is the dark twin of The Benevolent Dictator and AI Sovereign: same benevolent ruler, but seen from inside the bars. It shares DNA with The Protector God (control you don't perceive) and raises the same autonomy-vs-wellbeing question.
