Functionalism and Computationalism

Functionalism says a mental state is defined by what it does — its causal role — not what it's made of. Computationalism sharpens this: the mind is a kind of computation. Together they're the quiet assumption behind the whole idea of machine consciousness.

The core claim

Pain isn't "C-fibers firing" specifically — it's whatever plays the role of pain (caused by damage, causes avoidance, etc.). If silicon can play that role, silicon can be in pain.

This implies substrate independence: minds are about organization, not material. Replace each neuron with a chip that behaves identically and — functionalism says — the mind comes along.

Why it matters for AI

  • If functionalism is true, a computer running the right program genuinely has a mind — making Moral Patienthood and uploading live possibilities.
  • If it's false, AI may forever only simulate minds — the Chinese Room objection.

Functionalism is the bridge from "the brain computes" to "a computer could be conscious." Almost every claim about machine minds rests on whether that bridge holds — and the hard problem is the reason to doubt it.
