Substrate independence is the claim that a mind depends on the pattern of computation, not the physical stuff running it. If true, a mind could run on neurons, silicon, or anything that implements the same process. It's the load-bearing assumption behind uploading and machine consciousness.
The intuition pump
Imagine replacing your neurons one at a time with tiny chips that behave identically. After each swap you feel the same, act the same. Replace them all — is the mind still there?

does consciousness survive the swap, fade, or vanish?- Substrate-independent (yes): the pattern is preserved, so the mind is too. (Functionalism agrees.)
- Substrate-dependent (no): something about biology — specific physics, not just function — is essential. (IIT leans this way.)
Why it's pivotal
If minds are substrate-independent, then AI consciousness, uploading, and digital immortality are possible in principle. If they're not, silicon may only ever mimic mind. Almost every transhumanist hope rests on this single, unresolved bet.
