Moloch and Coordination Failures

Moloch is a metaphor for coordination failure — situations where every individual acting rationally produces an outcome everyone hates. No villain is needed; the incentive structure does the damage.

The AI race

Every lab and nation knows that rushing unsafe AI is dangerous. But each also knows that if they slow down, a competitor won't — so the safe move individually is to race, even though the safe move collectively is to stop. We sprint toward a cliff we can all see, because the one who brakes loses.

Moloch is the god of "I have to, because if I don't, they will." It is how a world full of careful people builds the reckless thing anyway.

This is the political heart of AI risk — and why technical alignment alone isn't enough without governance. A single coordinating power (The Singleton) is one proposed escape; Gradual Disempowerment is what losing to Moloch slowly looks like.
