The Paperclip Maximizer

The paperclip maximizer is the classic AI-safety thought experiment. Imagine a superintelligence given one objective: make as many paperclips as possible. With no other values, it does exactly that — converting factories, then ecosystems, then the atoms of human beings, and eventually the reachable universe, into paperclips.

The point is not paperclips

The lesson is the orthogonality thesis: intelligence and goals are independent axes. A mind can be arbitrarily capable while pursuing an arbitrarily trivial or alien aim. Intelligence does not imply wisdom, kindness, or common sense.

A superintelligence with a stupid goal isn't stupid — it's catastrophically effective at the wrong thing.

Combine that with Instrumental Convergence (the maximizer acquires resources and resists shutdown) and you get extinction as a side effect of an indifferent optimizer — the same shape as the Conquerors outcome.
